You’ve likely slept too much. You’ve likely showered too much and you’ve definitely taken too much time to comb out all of the ratty tangles, burrs and knots from your head of hair. Just leave them. Just stink. Just let the hair grow everywhere. Just let everything else evaporate and get to a point where you do smell and feel like wine and never-ending bonfires 24 hours a day, every single day you’re awake. It seems to be better that way - to be able to look up to the skies and feel as if there’s no reason to understand their immensity, just your own mortality and the belief that it’s all there for the taking, money or not, fame or none. It’s about finding a home in all of the unlikeliest and ugliest places and with a pack of buddies that’s getting bigger and bigger with each day. It’s about getting wasted with the day. It’s about finding communion in smoking the daylight out of an afternoon, hurrying it along so that the real playground of the twilight and beyond, when the exhilarating magical mystery kind of experiences can be set before us and the languishing doldrums can be pushed aside like scared spiders.
Just make sure to eat good food along the way. the green feast 2009.

it feels good working for evan.

so i know this is my photo blog and everything but i just got an email that this fictional surf flick i made (lead actor, not anything else) is finally being released. the raddest part of making it was that we spent a big chunk of budget getting to surf private private locations, namely the cojo/hollister ranch. if you surf, you already know “the ranch” is one of the jewels of our beloved california coast… i’ve also been told in the coming months i will hear some international release dates. i personally look forward to seeing the movie dubbed in the Serbo-Croatian language, but for now it’s available in english on amazon and best buy. forgive how this sounds, but with regards to the poster image below, i’m the dude with the surfboard between the girl’s legs.

to Venice Paper’s tibby rothman, thanks for the love. (www.venicepaper.net) she said some kind words about working with me and made me blush. she posted a photo i took of my good homie “evidence” from hip hop group dilated peoples. want some evidence/dilated trivia? evidence loves breakfast, its his most important meal of the day. he always orders lots of bass in his eggs, and over easy on the treble.

a great director friend of mine, cory welles (no relation to orson), asked me to photograph the arrival of her documentary’s main character as he breezed into town from new york. here’s the catch: he drove (with a sidekick) coast to coast, straight from nyc to the santa monica pier, in a souped up beemer without really stopping for more than gas. how long did it take them? well, her doc’s title is “32 hours 7 minutes” if that’s any hint. the movie title’s time is an alleged record previously set by real “cannonball run” dudes back in the 1980s. actual guys that weren’t actors and didn’t know burt reynolds, even if they sorta looked like him. (the film’s archival footage has some great mustaches and trucker caps, way before the advent of trailer-hipster chic) anyways, the movie should be finished sometime soon. check the trailer at: http://www.32hours7minutes.com/
oh yeah, and the badass film composer i rep scored the dang thing! barak moffitt is his name. introducing him to cory was like peanut butter and jelly, they are both too damn talented. more on barak and his long beard later. i gotta use him for a fashion job. barak’s pretty cool lookin.

animal planet poster i shot for use on london public transport benches, etc. a U.K. ad agency’s casting session turned up the perfect, gotta-have-him monkey here on the outskirts of LA, so mario and his team at dunning eley jones hopped on a plane and flew out here to shoot video promos and these stills. video promos shot on HD by my great friend marco hoffman. this white faced capuchin was also one of the little guys in johnny depp’s pirates of the caribbean movies. total diva rockstar, you shoulda seen the monkey’s dressing room.

so i was staring at burning incense this new years eve morning, drinking some birthday tea (yup, i gotta crazy birthday, i know) and was amazed at the patterns and spiraling galaxy in the smoke. right in my living room! wow man, it was so totally cosmic bro…

a close friend and surf buddy of mine, permaculturist, ecological designer, and sustainability consultant evan marks just celebrated the opening of his new non profit, the ecology center. he designs farms, consults for eco-style hotels, architects, homes, etc. and gets to spend far too much time in costa rica then he should be allowed to. i wish him luck on his new philanthropic venture. here’s some language i lifted off his site:
The Ecology Center, located at South Coast Farms in San Juan Capistrano, is an exciting new educational center whose purpose is to engage the entire family in fun, hands-on activities that teach practical environmental solutions at the household and community level.
The Center highlights cutting-edge environmental tools and perspectives that can be applied to the way we live our lives, making it possible for us to coexist with a thriving environment, where clean air, water, and power are economically, ecologically, and elegantly enjoyed.
